Hello. I was hoping you could answer a question I have about what type of product to put on my porch roof. It is almost a flat slope and currently has shingles on it; however, I would like to remove them and perhaps put something different on there, as I have some leaking issues.

Good afternoon Ramona
The main thing I can tell you any roof with a low pitch, it is more likely to have problems. Shingles only guide water they don’t stop water, even a good underlayment has no affect. Using a good ice shield will help. If you can find a color you like out of the three choices I would recommend low slope 1 ply or 2 ply. This product is expensive but really great. 10 feet by 10 feet is about $130. It’s a peel and stick product that will help your porch handle snow and heavy rain. Other options are to ice shield and then shingle for show this is only a second option. In the past I have used this method after a homeowner wanted everything to match perfect. I drove 2 hours to get the low slope because it was the right thing to do then I packed up ready to go and they asked if I could change it lol. I said no problem I explained to him in many years he will have problems just to let him know. I really hope this was helpful. Please ask any questions that might help you project. Team 547

Thanks so much. I know how important people need to be treated. When a customer asks me to do anything I do it. They tell me to jump I will. I know they help look after my kids and my wife, without customers I would have no work. With years of helping many people with their roofing projects and doing great work we have brought our company a far way. We receive multiple calls a day from referrals and that’s a great felling. I believe many Roofing companies let money go to their head and they forget about the small people. They start going higher and higher in their prices and soon they are doing less and less work. Not doing Roofing repairs because there is not much money to be made. Small things are very important. I still open my wife’s door every day. I told her in 20 years I’ve put in my time and she can open my door. I will be so sore from working it might be sooner. I like to work every day during roofing season and not sit in an office and collect money. The other day I was going the mall with my wife and she looks over and sees a kid with one of our 547 sweaters. I couldn’t tell who was. We have two kids 4 and 2 and teaching them hard work pays off is what we want to do. We have been also lucky to do many free repairs and ask the customer to donate the money to charity. I used to do so many for free and decided to ask then to make donations to the children’s hospital. The shoes I have used in the past are from costco. I use a new pair every week because they get so damaged from working. They have a softer bottom and never damage shingles. If you wear shoes with hard bottoms you will damage the shingles when they are warm. As for walking on steep roofs we are so used to working on the steeper pitch it seems like it’s just normal. 10/12 pitch is the limit and most people stop at 8/12. I like to install one shingle from the ladder and then stand on it. It sounds a little crazy but works. You also have to remember to be tied off at all times. Shingles shoot out and you could go down. Thanks so much team 547

We buy all our shingles mainly from SPAR MARATHON ROOFING and CONVOY ROOFING SUPPLY. Those two companies carry the best line of shingles. I like when people try to put down the landmark shingles when they deal with a different supply shops. Only reason they don’t carry this product at all the other supply shops. I will only provide people with the best product out there. I want my customers to have the best shingle for the long term.
When I’m not working I spend all the time with my wife and kids. Spending as much time as you can helps keep a family together. When I see our kids around kids who spend all day doing whatever I notice huge difference. We watch less TV and do more activities like piano, Learning and martial arts. It sounds funny but my 4 year old trains me every second day and its shocking to see how much she has learned. Spending hours a day teaching helps your kids grow to be smart and strong. Some times to smart, the other day I told my 4 year old to please clean up her toys while I clean the upstairs. She said to me Dad I do all my training everyday so can you please help me clean up then do your own cleaning lol. My heart just melted and I love being a great husband and father.
For workers we have many great friends and family members working for us. Our main guys have little ones as well and new born baby who is so cute. During the spring and summer we only have about 20 guys but 12 full time workers who are long time and great part of the company. This year we will be doing less work and more safety. We spend so much time doing too much work on the steepest roofs we need to really think about are safety. We follow all the rules and do great but this year we have hired an outside safety management team to take us to the safest please we can be.

We thank you so much for the post. Having posts helps other people feel free to ask anything they want and hopefully somebody can help them out. We care about what can help somebody out more than anything. When people call me about roofing their own house I tell them what to do and what they need. I feel great just being able to help out. Lots of people just don’t care about helping people. I see it day to day more with contractors then anything. I have told myself from day one, never become one of them and do great work and you will climb to the top. We worked so hard for so long we are finally able to spend more time with the family. It’s so nice to hear nice comments. When you own a small business the main thing is getting by the first couple years. Many people don’t make it. I give them respect for taking a chance. Everything I deal with is from small businesses like myself. I get theses big companies asking me to switch with them. I ask are you part of a big company? They say YES and go on. I tell them sorry I only deal with small businesses. They are like oh and get all mad. Small businesses need the communities support. I drive out of my way to make sure I help who I can. The most useful place I have found is on kijiji. That site can find you anything you want. We started our company on that site. Thanks Team 547

I’m sorry to hear you’re upset. First thing let’s try to relax you won’t get anywhere faster being mad. Just being alive is enough to keep anybody happy. If you can explain a little more what you are mad about a roofing company not fixing a roofing project or a shingle manufacturer? There is a big difference between the both of them. That will help me explain the problem a little better. There are many steps to take in both. I would like you to prepare now just in case things don’t work out for you. I myself have been down the path before. I have found contractors are the worst. The get paid from the homeowner then don’t pay you. They use the money for another job and think they will pay you later. Then that job gets messed up and you don’t get paid. After liens and lawyers you finally get paid.

When I first started roofing I used whatever product IKO HARMONY and CERTAINTEED. We shingled a house garage and shed with3 tab CertainTeed. After one year the shingles on the garage curled in one small area. The homeowner called and freaked out. I had told them I have never seen this before and will need some time to figure out what the steps where. I called Jeff from Spar Marathon roofing in Winnipeg he advised me to get a sample of the strip on the back side with a number on it. I had taken pictures and keep on it making sure it was getting looked after. They had sent out a rep and they approved a total new roof and everything. I was so shocked. If we purchased our shingles from anywhere else this would not have been approved. They also upgraded the shingles. As of today I will only use landmark shingles. I have tried to help so many people with Iko and harmony shingles and they got told they will pay for some tar but they have no warranty then. Just really told them they will get nothing. I did a customer’s roof with harmony after he was paid out his shingles where 3 years old and curled so bad. He was a big wig and I think they didn’t want to mess with him. Plus when I gave him a quote I knew it would be hard so I went so low not making much money at all they would more than likely consider it. If you have to deal with all this just keep going and calling working you was down the steps and be calm and people will listen to you a lot more. When you keep up with everything making detailed notes it helps. Good luck Thanks so much I hope this might have helped a bit.

I guarantee Iko shingles are great I used them for years. I would not change product. Get it strait BUDDY.

Thank you for the post. Yes that may be true to you and I wouldn’t ever try to tell you are wrong. I would like to let you know a couple months ago there was a big article in the free press how they don’t pay on warranties. I have shingled many complex buildings for big companies and seen the damages that have come from them. I would never use them and if I was told to, I would tell them the same thing. Everybody does have their own opinion. When you do 900 bundle buildings and about 80 of them you see the products quality and many close to the end runs. You might not ever see those during your roofing experience. We have and no homeowner deserves to deal with that. I wish the best for you and thank you so much for the comment. Thanks Team 547

That’s one funny question. If I had to use another Roofing company who would I use? I’m sure there are many great roofers out there. As for companies I would find a company who had same workers for a long time. I would have to say Dr Roof would be my guess. I know form comments from the supply shop they are great as well. I mainly hear horror roofing stories and most from bigger companies who don’t even care and smaller roofing businesses who just starting out not much exp. There workers are under paid so they do what even. I only refer contactors that I have seen firsthand. This way I can make sure the job is done properly. Thanks so much for the question.
